Know your Gaultier Townland - Ballynaneashagh

In a new, and very popular series of Facebook articles, Michael Farrell encourages members to Know your Townlands.
Ballynaneashagh/Baile na nDéiseach
This week the Gaultier Townland that we are looking at is Ballynaneashagh/Baile na nDéiseach – Town of the Deise. Ballynaneashagh is where the Waterford Corporation operated a municipal cemetery.

In Griffith’s valuation of 1847 - 1864 the area of the cemetery is just over 9 acres. In the 1901 census there are 41 people living in Ballynaneashagh in 5 families. In the 1911 census there are 31 people living in Ballynaneashagh in 5 families.

At least 2 of the 1901 families are not living there in 1911 and in both census there are a lot of people living in Ballynaneashagh who were born in either Kilkenny or Wexford. In the 1911 census there is one family with two of its members working as cemetery caretakers.

Canon Patrick Power, the Gaultier historian who was born in the townland of Callaghane on 8 March 1862 was buried in Ballynaneashagh after he died on 16 October 1951.

It is part of the Civil Parish of Kilbarry, which is one of the Civil Parishes of the Barony of Gaultier. Ballynaneashagh has an area 0.52 square miles /1.3454 km square with 332 acres. It borders the following townlands:

Ballybeg (Gaultier) to the south Ballycashin (Middlethird) to the west Butlerstown North (Middlethird) to the west Butlerstown South (Middlethird) to the west Kilbarry (Gaultier) to the east Lisduggan (Middlethird) to the east Big Lismore (Middlethird) to the west Skibbereen (Middlethird) to the north
Michael Farrell is currently society chairman

Woodstown Ladies Cricket Club
In 1988, two ladies Valerie Moloney and Lelia Collins decided to start a ladies’ cricket team at Woodstown. The team was called the Woodstown Cricket Club. The younger players received tremendous support from sisters Grace Flanagan and Mickie Purcell whose mother, Mrs Clarke from Ballinakill House was a player with the Waterford Ladies Club in the 1940’s... Other members of the original Woodstown team not in the photo were Hilary Farrell, Betatrice Berclazand and Maeve Phelan. The first coach to the team was John Burke. A great supporter of the Woodstown Cricket Club was Mrs Coughlan from the Saratoga Bar. Adie Coughlan of the Saratoga Bar donated a special trophy for when they played the ladies from the neighbouring county of Wexford. It was named the Saratoga Cup. The ladies from the model county won and the Saratoga Cup is somewhere in Wexford now
