The August Photo from our 2019 Calendar. Cloughernagh

This photo shows one of the oldest public houses in the Barony of Gaultier. The earliest publican that we know of is John Kennedy of Callaghane. The 1901 census records that he was born in 1820 and that he was a publican. The same census records that John Murphy of Cloughernagh was both a publican and a farmer. John was born in 1863 and married Maryanne Kennedy (a daughter of John Kennedy of Callaghane) in 1886 and at the time of the 1911 census they had a family of eleven children.

Cloughernagh as it was known was one of the principal meeting places for social get–togethers in that part of the Barony of Gaultier. The Murphy family ceased to be publicans in that pub in 1994. After a number of owners, the last owner, Gerry Keane ceased trading as a Publican in 2016. The property is now a private residence.
